The Honey Tragedy – Adapted from an ancient Guyana Amerindian myth – By Peter Halder

The Honey Tragedy

(Adapted from an ancient Guyana Amerindian myth)

By Peter Halder

Mead, a drink made from honey, was a favourite of the Gods of ancient mythology. The overpowering yearning and taste for honey by an Amerindian maiden at Tiger Hill, Upper Demerara River, led to tragedy in her life.

Lutu Alstrum was the only daughter and child of a Macushi Amerindian couple who lived at Grassfield, some 40 miles south of Linden. When she was born, for whatever reason, she refused to suckle on her mother’s breasts. A family member suggested to her mother to put honey on her breast nipple. Lutu loved the taste and so was able to feed on her mother’s breast milk. There was no honey available at Grassfield, it was brought from time to time by family and friends from a Sacred Grove of medicinal trees located at Tiger Hill. A huge honeycomb on a golden coloured leafy tree in the centre of the Grove, dripped honey. No one saw any bees around.    Continue reading

The Awakening – by Peter Halder

The Awakening – by Peter Halder

Emil Seon lived at Malali in a cottage which he built on a sand hill overlooking a series of rapids in the Demerara River below. It was 6.30 p.m. and he was busily engaged in getting dressed to attend a traditional Easter Saturday family Party across the river.

The family usually spent Easter Saturday night singing native Amerindian songs, drinking sleepy tonic made from sweet potatoes, and eating boiled cassava, yams and smoked labba. The Party ended at 11.30 and Emil hurried to return to his home. Frightening tales were many about strange happenings in the dense forest area that surrounded the Malali Settlement on both sides of the river.   Continue reading

THE TIGER AND ANTEATER – (An ancient rainforest tale)

by Peter Halder

Tiger had finished eating a deer he had captured and decided to go to a nearby stream for water to digest his meal. Filled, he found a nearby mora tree and rested in its shade on the ground. Some time after, he continued roaming in the rainforest.

He had not walked far when he encountered an anteater. He was amused at the ugly shape of the animal, especially its long funny proboscis and its clumsy toes.

He laughed aloud and shouted, “Ha! Ha1 Ha! what a funny looking creature you are. You are ugly like sin.”
The anteater replied, “I am not amused. You also look funny to me. Those stripes on your skin look like a woman’s dress. And your fangs are so crazy looking you ought to go and see a dentist.”   Continue reading

Electric eel

Electric eel

Growing up as a child, I had often heard about the dangerous electric eel from adults in my neighbourhood since there was the La Repentir Cemetery trench, the Sussex Street trench, the Punt Trench and the Lamaha Canal in the Sussex Street backland. I swam in the Cemetery Trench, the Sussex Street trench, the Punt Trench regularly as a kid, at Clay, the Paaloff and near Cooper Street, Albouystown and in the Lamaha Canal. I was nipped by a piranha at Clay but to my delight, I never came across an electric eel. I also swam in the Demerara, Essequibo, Berbice, Pomeroon and Ireng Rivers; Kara Kara, Catabuli, Kamuni, and Mahaicony Creeks. Never came across one.
