THE BANSHEE DEMON – by Peter Halder

THE BANSHEE DEMON

by Peter Halder

Simone and Tiara were cousins and next door neighbors. It was October 31 and the two young girls were at a loss at to what to do that Halloween evening. Their parents could not afford costumes so they were not keen on going trick or treating.

“Well, life is full of let downs but we can still find something to do. So you have any ideas?” asked Simone.

“Aha. I’m glad you asked. I did have an idea. What if we walk around the neighborhood and admire some of the costumes worn by kids for the night. Who knows, maybe something weird may happen which will make our Halloween stroll a night to remember.”

“Good idea Tiara. I sure our parents will have no objections if we walked around together holding hands. Maybe we can even take that small wooden Holy Cross you have on your bedroom wall with us just in case we run into a demon.” Continue reading

The Electric Eel

Electric eel

Electric eel

Growing up as a child, I had often heard about the dangerous electric eel from adults in my neighbourhood since there was the La Repentir Cemetery trench, the Sussex Street trench, the Punt Trench and the Lamaha Canal in the Sussex Street backland. I swam in the Cemetery Trench, the Sussex Street trench, the Punt Trench regularly as a kid, at Clay, the Paaloff and near Cooper Street, Albouystown and in the Lamaha Canal. I was nipped by a piranha at Clay but to my delight, I never came across an electric eel. I also swam in the Demerara, Essequibo, Berbice, Pomeroon and Ireng Rivers; Kara Kara, Catabuli, Kamuni, and Mahaicony Creeks. Never came across one.

THE WAIF OF RUIMVELDT … A FOLK TALE

By  Peter Halder

The Waif

He appeared from nowhere and disappeared to nowhere.
He appeared to be a child, no taller than four feet and thin.

He appeared suddenly one morning on the wide path along the cane fields on the southern side of the trench separating the Laing Avenue apartments, from the sugar cane fields at Ruimveldt.         The Waif of Ruimveldt, as he came to be known, was dark skinned, had black curly hair and a round face with a perky nose and thin lips. He wore a green short-sleeve shirt and short green pants. They matched the color of the cane fields. He was bare feet.

The Waif placed on the grassy ground several Monkey Apples which grew on a tree in the woods beyond the cane fields. He picked them up one by one, mashed each in his right hand and dropped the orange colored pulp and seeds on the ground forming a wide circle. Continue reading
